Teacher's day special: The importance of teachers

We all have happiest memories of our schooldays. We enjoyed a lot with our friends, but the main motive that we went to the school is that we went to study. We also enjoy just sitting in the classroom quietly, and our teacher teaching us about some topic.

Today, on the 5th September 2021, is the birthday of India's first Vice President: Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He not only served as the president of India from 1962-1967, but he was also an academic, a philosopher, a professor and a politician. In India, we celebrate his birthday as teacher's day throughout the country.

Before we hop into today's topic, let's discover more about Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888 in Tiruttani of Chittor District of the erstwhile Madras Presidency which is now in the Tiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu. His parents were Sarvepalli Veeraswami and Sita (Sitamma). His family now hails from Sarvepalli village in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. He spent his early years in Tiruttani and Tirupati. His father was a subordinate revenue official of a local zamindar (the local landlord). He completed his Primary Education from K. V. High School at Tiruttani. In 1896 he moved to the Hermansburg Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Tirupati and Government High Secondary School, Walajpet. He was such an intelligent and such a knowledgeable person that he was awarded all through his academic life. He joined the Voorhees College in Vellore for his high school education. After completing his F.A. he joined the Madras Christian College (affiliated to the University of Madras) at the age of 16. He graduated from the same college in the year 1907, and also achieved his master's degree from the same college.

How did Dr. Radhakrishnan's birthday started to become celebrated as Teacher's day?

When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India then his students requested him that his birthday should be celebrated as a special day.

He replied to his students that, instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be his proud privilege that his birthday 5th September is celebrated as Teacher's day in all over India.

And since then, we celebrate Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday as Teacher's day in India.

Now that we have seen that why do we celebrate Teacher's day on the occasion of the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, let's hop into today's topic, which is a teacher. We all have our own definition of a teacher. Some of say that a teacher is someone who explains and lectures us about something. This definition is only partly correct because a teacher is not only someone who lectures us about something, but a teacher is someone who is able to teach us something.

A teacher is a person who teaches you something new. No matter the teacher is of whatever age, or whatever educational qualification that teacher has, but if he has some skill that he is willing to teach the student, and the student is willing to learn that skill, then that person is the teacher.

There is always something that is good about any person. So if you learn that good thing about him/her, then it is going to be good for you.
